The Coleman Company, of Wichita, Kansas, opened a trailer manufacturing plant, in Somerset, Pensylvania, in 1967.
They continued production of hard top folding campers, under their own banner, until the plant was acquired, by Fleetwood Enterprises Inc, of Riverside, California, in 1989.
In January 2011, FTCA ceased production of folding campers at the Somerset plant. Quality control issues with the plastic roofs, as well as massive production and overhead costs lead to the ultimate demise of the company. Indeed, there was speculation that the folding camper side of the business had been transferred to FTCA, and then ceased, in order to prevent any law suits against Fleetwood Enterprises, who continued to manufacture large A and C class motor homes.
Production of a vast variety of models, under both the Coleman and Fleetwood banners continued, until May 2008, when the company was acquired by Folding Trailer Company Acquisition Inc, who continued to manufacture both brands.
Likewise, Coleman, themselves, continue as a brand, but dealing, mostly, in standard tents and camping accessories. Neither company continues to produce folding campers of any type.
The number of models is extensive, however, incidence in the UK is less common than many brands, and, hence, we will be looking at them in more detail, as the Guide continues to progress.
